According to the 2018
census 2.6 million Muslims live in Italy
and consist of 4.3 of the population despite Islam being
the second largest religion in the country, only 50 of the nearly eight
thousand Italian municipalities have
dedicated spaces for Muslims inside
their cemeteries.
The first cemetery
space for Muslims in Italy was
established in Trieste in 1856. Unfortunately, not much progress has been
made on the issue since then in the past
few months local newspapers have
published several letters with appeals
by Muslims calling for more Islamic
spaces to be established in cemeteries
as soon as possible. The appeals have been now fulfilled. It

This project is seen
as a for huge relief to Muslims, as they
are only 58 Muslim cemeteries in the
entire country finding a place to bury
their relatives is not a new problem for
the Italian Muslim community. The high
amount of coronavirus casualties in
Italy has compounded the already short supply of Muslim burial spots.
This
project fulfills one of the many
necessities that Muslims of Italy
desperately need
however, Italy's right-wing league party has voiced its opposition to the Tragliatella project.
We hope that Italy
succeeds in this project soon proving to
be an assistance to the Italian Muslims
in this time of need.
